Focus on Africa

This tool is used to visualize the effectiveness of immunization strategy in African nations.

The data presented in this tool is from the World Health Organization (WHO).

World Health Organization: Its primary role is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations’ system. The WHO's main areas of work are:

  • Health systems
  • Promoting health through the life-course
  • Noncommunicable diseases
  • Communicable diseases
  • Corporate services
  • Preparedness, surveillance and response.

Immunization Effectiveness in Africa

The visualization includes data on seven different types of preventable, communicable diseases, organized into five groups by vaccine:

Diseases WHO Vaccine Codes
Measles MCV1, MCV2
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis DTP1, DTP3
Neonatal Tetanus PAB
Polio Pol3
Yellow Fever YFV

Visualizing Immunization Effectiveness in Africa

Below are example use cases for questions that this visualization can help to investigate.

Are immunizations effective?

Our visualization shows that African countries with high immunization rates also have low incidence rates for each the disease. The example to the right shows Botswana. Botswana’s immunization rates for each of the 5 disease groups are consistently above the African average. Botswana also has disease incidence rates that are consistently below the African average. The trends shown with this tool could lead to further investigation to better understand the causality in the relationship between immunization and disease incidence rates.

Which countries need more international aid for health programs?

Our visualization shows that Nigeria is a country that could use an increase in international aid to help augment its health programs. For each of the 5 disease groups analyzed with our tool, Nigeria has been consistently below the African average. Nigeria also has been consistently above average in number of reported disease incidence cases.

Which diseases require renewed focus to combat?

Our visualization shows that Yellow Fever has had the highest average of reported incidences in the last 5 years (based on the bottom right incidence chart). The map shows that many African countries in eastern and southern Africa either do not report or do not implement immunization programs for the YFV vaccine. Further investigation into Yellow Fever immunization programs in these areas may reveal a need for renewed focus against this disease.
